How long can the police hold money found? & can they "suspect" it stolen when nobody has claimed it in a week+
This money has been held for a week and a half now. And my brother found it at school. They "suspect" he stole it, since he's somewhat of a troublemaker. Can they even suspect it stolen without someone claiming it or saying they have lost money? How long can they hold it?

- I don't know. This very issue arose on a Brady Bunch episode but I can't remember how it was resolved. I know the boys ended up with a reward.
- They really can't suspect it of being money obtained by the proceeds of crime unless they watched an illegal transaction go down, or found the cash during a raid on a drug house. We can only legally hold it for 120 days, after that it becomes the "finders" if turned in by a civilian, and failing that it goes to the Receiver General. COP QUOTE : "Can you run faster than 1200 feet per second?"
- no they can't say it's stolen, but they can hold it for 30 days and not 120 days like the cop says in the other answer that you got. maybe you should tell him/her that the money was found at school and not in a raid. i hope this helps you.
